Why Learning Latin Is Still Worth It
When people hear that I teach Latin, the first thing they usually say is, “But it’s a dead language, right?” I get it—it’s not exactly the language you hear at the grocery store. But here’s the thing: Latin is far from useless. In fact, learning Latin can open up more doors than you’d expect.
It Makes Learning Other Languages So Much Easier
Latin is the parent of all the Romance languages—Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, and Romanian. Learn Latin first, and you’ll start recognizing familiar words and grammar patterns in all of them. Even English owes more than half of its vocabulary to Latin. Suddenly, big words aren’t so intimidating anymore—you’ll actually know what they mean just by breaking them down.
Your Grammar Will Thank You
If you’ve ever struggled with identifying parts of speech or what a direct object is, Latin will fix that fast. Because Latin grammar is so precise, you can’t help but get better at spotting how sentences work. The bonus? Your English writing will get sharper, and your vocabulary will grow without you even trying.
You’ll See the Roman World Everywhere
Studying Latin is like having a backstage pass to Western history. Our laws, politics, architecture, and even everyday sayings—so much of it comes straight from Rome. Reading Latin lets you hear the words of Cicero, Vergil, and Ovid exactly as they wrote them. It’s like stepping back in time and having a conversation with the ancient world.
It Trains Your Brain
Latin is basically a workout for your mind. It teaches you to think logically, notice details, and solve puzzles. Those skills transfer to anything—science, law, math, even creative writing.
At The Classics Lab, we make Latin approachable, engaging, and, yes—fun! Whether you’re learning it for school, for your career, or just for the joy of it, Latin is a skill that stays with you for life.
